The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) believes that sport has the intrinsic ability to unite people and bring about positive social change in communities. Through creating and fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, we can create stronger organizations that are more resilient and responsive to the needs of the community.
In 2023, the OSEG Foundation launched the Equity through Diverse Impact (EDI) Grant, dedicated to supporting Ottawa-based organizations that align with the mission of using the power of sport as a catalyst for social change to improve the lives of children and youth facing barriers to sports and recreation programs. The OSEG Foundation EDI Grant assists to remove financial barriers by offering organizations support in enhancing their inclusive practices to ensure all youth have equal opportunity to participate in sport and recreational programming.
Last year, the OSEG Foundation created opportunities for over 2,000 children and youth to participate in sport programs addressing gender equity, access to sports programming in priority communities, and inclusive experiences for 2SLGBTQ+ youth and youth with disabilities.
Read about Omer and his story in sport programs:
Omer, a 15-year-old newcomer youth in our basketball program, initially struggled with feelings of isolation and cultural adjustment. As a recent immigrant, he faced language barriers and challenges in connecting with his peers. However, our inclusive sport program became a bridge for Omer to build connections and find a sense of belonging.
Through the shared love of basketball, Omer quickly formed friendships with fellow youth. The program not only provided a space for him to express himself through the sport but also offered a supportive community that understood and embraced his background. Today, Omer is an active and engaged member of our initiative, showcasing not only his basketball skills but also his ability to forge meaningful connections within his new community.
