This summer, Camp GOTR Ottawa brought the spirit of Girls on the Run (GOTR) to life in a week-long camp that left a lasting impact on every participant. Just like the afterschool program, Camp GOTR is designed to help girls develop confidence, build friendships, and discover the power of teamwork in a fun, supportive environment.
The camp welcomed 170 girls ages 8 to 10 from across the city over the 9 weeks of camp. Throughout the week, campers participated in activities that combined creativity, movement, and skill-building. A typical day included morning icebreakers, games focused on teamwork and empathy, outdoor movement and running activities, and time for personal reflection. Every element was designed to help girls recognize their own strengths and build meaningful connections with others.
The impact of Camp GOTR was clear by the end of the week. Many girls who arrived on the first day feeling nervous or shy left camp with newfound confidence, leadership skills, and lasting friendships. At an age when self-esteem often declines and societal pressures increase, programs like Camp GOTR help young girls develop resilience, self-belief, and social connections that extend far beyond the camp itself.
“It was amazing to see the difference between the first day and the last,” said camp counsellor Mairin McGuinty. “In just one week, the girls came out more confident, encouraged each other, and left with new friends. Watching them have fun and work together was so special.”
Camp GOTR Ottawa embodies the mission of Girls on the Run: to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident while building important life skills. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, families, and donors, the camp was not just a week of fun, it was an investment in the confidence and future of every girl who participated.
As we look to the Fall, we are excited to have over 325 girls participate in the 10-week Girls on the Run. If you believe in the transformational power of sport and physical activity for young girls and are interested in supporting, check out how you can support: Become a coach! You do not need to be a runner; you simply need to have a desire to support and encourage the next generation. Coaches receive all the tools and support they need and find that they get as much out of coaching as they give. Consider making a monetary gift. You can create an opportunity for a girl to participate in the 10-week Girls on the Run program with a one-time gift of $200 (you can also set up monthly giving to break up the cost!). Or, you can send a girl to Camp Girls on the Run next summer with a gift of $60.
